HENRIETTA JOHNSON MEDICAL CENTER
Building for Healthier Communities
Henrietta Johnson Medical Center has provided quality medical and dental services for more than two generations of Delawareans considered historically underserved. Our patients include those from low-income communities who in many cases have limited or no insurance. In recent years we have also been serving a growing homeless population. A patient's ability to pay has never been a barrier to receiving quality, caring services at the Henrietta Johnson Medical Center.
Today, the Henrietta Johnson Medical Center, even with two locations, is bursting at the seams. We are serving over 7,700 patients each year in the same building that five years ago was serving 5,000. This trend has put a strain on our ability to serve current patients in a timely manner and limits our ability to accept new patients. Lack of space means inadequate examination and treatment rooms and prevents us from hiring new physicians, nurses and dentists.
Most severe is our need to expand the dental and women's health services, both areas essential to the overall health of Delaware. We are moving forward with exciting and cost-effective plans to convert space within our existing building footprint. The new construction will enable us - without disruption in delivery of care - to more than double our medical service area for patients, current and new. Additional parking is also needed as the cars of staff and patients from all around New Castle County fill our own lot and spill over into an adjacent church lot and onto local streets daily. These improvements should serve us well for the next 10 years.
